Description

From our Pin of the month, we bring you a dainty funerary plate pin, cast in steel, a delightful oddity to add to your collection.

From a popular custom dating back to the 17th century, plates such as these were nailed to the lids of coffins. The practice of removing the plates from the coffin before burial became the trend around late 18th century and family members would keep them as cherished mementos of the deceased.  Victorians would also pin these plates to flowers laid to rest over the grave of a dearly departed child.
